The most popular microblogging website, Tumblr, has rolled out an update to its iOS application. The content it offers isn’t a favorite among users. Tumblr has blocked users of all iOS customers from using outdated or flagged content to be able to confirm with Apple’s App Store’s security standards. To make it easier for Apple, Tumblr has gone quite far in censoring the platform and is negatively impacting users’ experience.
The words that indicate that they’re sexually explicit blog posts classified as mature and tags that suggest sexual explicitness aren’t accessible in Tumblr’s iOS app. Tumblr announced that it had to “extend its definition of “what”sensitive” content could be” to “remain accessible via an Apple Store.” It is a legitimate concern since Apple has a history of taking Tumblr out of its App Store due to violating its rules. At present, Tumblr does everything it can to produce Apple content. As a result, it’s causing lots of problems for its customers.

On Tumblr, the most efficient method of locating articles and blogs is to search for tags. Enter keywords that you believe are relevant to the kind of blog you’d like to visit, and Tumblr will give you relevant results. But some websites and articles are designated as being “mature”. Tumblr’s algorithm prevents the appearance of these blogs in the results of searches and the dashboards of users. It’s logical because it could be anyone looking for blogs, and they’re not exposed to mature content.
The issue has to do with the fact that Tumblr has been limiting tag usage. The site has been restricted to certain tags that appear innocent however they are used in sexually explicit language. It impacts the user experience as the tags are primary and unrelated to sexual activities. For instance, “69” is now being blocked as an identifier. It is also true for”submission”, A Twitter thread aggregates all keywords. Tumblr recognizes as sensitive and is blocked by its iOS application.
If someone blogs, Tumblr assigns relevant tags based on the context. The system does it automatically. But, things could get even odd in the case of iOS users, according to a person on Twitter has noted. Users can’t even visit this blog when they receive a message on the blog because”submission”. Was the one tag “submission” that was automatically added by the website. Therefore the blog was banned.
There’s more, “Eugene Levy” is one of the banned tags on Tumblr. Other tags banned include “girl,” “sad,” “Alec Lightwood,” suicide prevention,” Single dad,” and numerous others. They don’t have any relationship to sexuality. They considered banned words that cause harm instead of benefiting since those seeking help for suicide prevention will be given an email that reads:

“This content has been kept private”. It’s a shame. Google Doc keeps track of the banned tags available in The iOS application. It’s important to remember that the phrases or words mentioned are also accessible across other platforms. Android phones and computers, a variety of users took to Twitter to express their opinion regarding the absurdity of the practice of censorship.
Tumblr recognizes the issues its policy of censorship causes iOS users and strives to minimize the negative consequences. “We’re creating an online toggle that allows users to decide whether they want to allow sensitive content in iOS applications,”. The basis of what says is that it’ll seek an acceptable middle way to ensure that users don’t suffer greatly.
Yet, Apple has its head in shame when it comes time to view content on its platform. Has announced it will be looking into the tag list of tags that aren’t available to be used in the iOS application. The review is set to begin in January. In the meantime, iOS users may use an alternative device to access relevant blogs and articles or utilize the limited version.
